Artwork
This work explores an experimental visual approach in which Saudi visual artist Hani Jadwi reinterprets and develops the red-and-blue double-exposure technique, traditionally associated with photography, within the medium of video. His approach seeks to expand the possibilities of the technique by moving beyond the still image into moving images, creating a visual experience that challenges the conventional notion of a single image composition.
The work draws on a collection of scenes from the artist’s everyday life, forming a visual autobiography reshaped through the overlapping of color-coded visual layers. Using specially designed red and blue filter glasses, viewers can explore two distinct visual compositions. Each filter reveals elements and details that are not perceived in the same way through the other. When the two layers are brought together, a third composition emerges, integrating elements of both into a unified image. Through this approach, Jadwi develops a new application of the technique, bringing together two distinct modes of visual perception and a composite image within the same artwork.
Beyond its technical experimentation, the work introduces a philosophical dimension concerned with multiple perspectives and the different ways in which reality can be interpreted. Through its three visual compositions, the work invites multiple readings of a single image. Opinions may differ and interpretations may contradict one another, yet each may hold a degree of validity from a particular perspective. No single interpretation necessarily exhausts all the possible meanings of the work.
The visual technique thus becomes an integral part of the work’s conceptual framework rather than merely a means of producing a visual effect. The different compositions embody the possibility of viewing the same material from multiple perspectives, while the scenes from everyday life connect this idea to personal experience, memory, and documentation. By bringing together visual autobiography, artistic experimentation, and reflection on perception and interpretation, Jadwi presents a work that explores the relationship between images and their capacity to sustain multiple readings.
